Iowa State Representative Helen Miller

Please join me on October 1 for the Iowa Criminal Justice Summit 2015, an event to address disparities in justice for minorities and others, such as the mentally ill, the homeless, etc.. In the past year, I have talked with a variety of stakeholders in the three branches of government and the community. The clear message I have received is that we need a forum to discuss key issues AND identify a Plan of Action to facilitate real change. The purpose of the Summit is two-fold: 1) to create awareness of the core issues within the criminal justice area; and 2) to serve as both a call and guide to action for the legislature, the executive branch, the judiciary, and community stakeholders.

The Summit program is quite impressive.  Mark Holden, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Koch Industries and Van Jones, co-founder of #Cut50 will provide the keynote address and provide a balanced perspective for our audience.  Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady will discuss juvenile justice; Lamont Carey, President/CEO, LaCarey Enterprises, LLC and Shaka Senghor (#Cut50) are scheduled to discuss re-entry, skill development and technology issues; and Iowa Public Safety Director Roxanne Ryan will head up a panel on law enforcement and policing. We have confirmed a racial disparity panel with representatives from the Latino, African American and other communities and a panel of leaders from several states to discuss various initiatives, what has worked and where changes are needed.  Finally, we have contacted the presidential campaigns to seek involvement from the various candidates as well.

It’s time to begin the process of change. Iowa can be a leader in this area, as we have been in other areas of human rights, and the summit will begin the change process. Join me in Cedar Falls, Iowa on October 1 for this vital discussion.
