Physical Plant Safety Committee

Roles & Responsibilities

Mission of the Safety Committee

The Physical Plant Safety and Health Committee addresses safety concerns and promotes a safe work environment for Physical Plant employees consistent with state and federal guidelines.

Goals of the Safety Committee

  • Involve employees in safety management.
  • Maintain a safe workplace.
  • Involve employee participation in all safety programs.
  • Capitalize on the opportunity to work with others across campus.

Committee Formation

  • Membership on the committee is to be voluntary and will meet any existing labor agreements.
  • Volunteer committee membership will rotate every two- (2) years.
  • Ex-officio members to the committee will include a representative from Management, AFSCME, University Safety Officer, University Safety Coordinator, and the University Radiation/Chem Officer. The purpose of the ex-officio membership is to provide continuity, lend experience and expertise to the Committee.

Committee Operation

  • Meetings will be held on the first Thursday of every month.
  • Membership is on two- (2) year rotation.
  • Discuss and follow up on all submitted safety concerns utilizing applicable information.
  • Discuss accident prevention methods.
  • Review previous accidents and injuries.
  • Conduct periodic safety inspections of the employee work sites.
  • Study safety policies/procedures and recommend change.

Duties & Responsibilities

Chairperson

The Chairperson will lead the meeting and will report Committee activities and forward recommendations to Management. The Physical Plant Safety Coordinator shall maintain records of all Safety Committee Meetings and actions.

Safety Committee Members

Safety Committee Members have the following responsibilities:

  • Attend monthly meetings and serve two-year term.
  • Discuss safety activities and unsafe acts/conditions.
  • Encourage all Employees to work safely.
  • Safety Committee Member will be provided the necessary training in:
    • Function of the committee.
    • Current email program.
    • OSHA 10-hour Industrial Standards.
    • OSHA 10-hour Construction Standards.
    • Provided opportunity to attend Iowa Governor’s Safety Conference
