What is a multimodal center?

A multimodal center is a structure that ties together several modes of transportation. The UNI Multimodal Transportation Center is a collaboration between UNI, the city of Cedar Falls, the city of Waterloo and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MET).

Where is the UNI Multimodal Transportation Center located?

The UNI Multimodal Transportation Center, the multi-level transit facility, is located on 23rd Street, just east of Campbell Hall. The facility replaces the Commons parking lot and four university-owned houses. House movers relocated two sorority houses to university-owned lots one block north. The site was selected following campus input.

Why did UNI want a multimodal center?

The UNI Multimodal Transportation Center will give students, visitors, faculty and staff easier access to the campus and the surrounding communities as part of our continuing goal to make UNI a friendly place to visit. The facility will be a stop for the Panther Shuttle, MET Transit and Safe Ride buses. It also provides easy access to the Cedar Valley Nature Trails bicycle paths.

The facility also provides an additional location for parking and access to all areas of campus, while helping maintain UNI's signature park-like, pedestrian atmosphere.

What will a multimodal center add to the campus?

The UNI Multimodal Transportation Center will tie together different forms of transportation, making UNI more accessible to the people of surrounding communities, and conversely, making the surrounding communities more accessible to UNI students, visitors, faculty and staff.

The multimodal facility also supports UNI's ongoing commitment to sustainable practices by reducing vehicular traffic around campus. In addition, solar panels will be installed on the facility and will supply energy to the UNI Multimodal Transportation Center.

Will there be any services in the UNI Multimodal Transportation Center?

An elevator, vending machines, a waiting area and restrooms are available in the pavilion.  There also are 10 lockers available for bicycles.

What type of security will the center have?

There are emergency phones and security cameras in the UNI Multimodal Transportation Center and UNI Police will patrol the area as they do the entire campus.

How much did this project cost?

The total project budget is approximately $12 million. Eighty percent of the funds came from a grant through the Federal Transit Administration. The remaining 20 percent came from UNI. A major portion of the UNI funding came from the value of the land and parking funds.

How many additional parking spaces will there be? What kind of parking spaces will be included?

There are 587 parking spaces, including the surface lot and the deck.  There are approximately 14 handicap permit spaces, 31 GM-permit spaces, 205 A-permit spaces and 155 public parking/visitor meter spaces with a 10-hour limit in the deck.  There are 177 B-permit spaces on the surfaced lot, however no B-permit spaces in the facility.  All said, an additional 350 spaces were made available from pre-construction totals.

How much will it cost to park at the UNI Multimodal Transportation Center?

Fees for permit spaces are based on Board of Regents, State of Iowa approved schedule. For the fall semester A is $135, B is $76.80 for faculty and staff and $70.50 for students, GM (reserved parking permit) is $363.00. Meter rates will remain the same $0.50 per hour. Metered spaces will be governed by two multi-meter machines located near the stairwells of the facility.
