All faculty and staff members are required to participate in either the Iowa Public Employees Retirement System (IPERS) or the University Funded Retirement Plan through Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF). The only exceptions are foreign nationals who are in the United States as exchange scholars, trainees, professors, teachers, research assistants and/or specialists. If an employee does not choose a retirement plan, he or she will default to IPERS. Serious consideration must be given to choosing a retirement plan because it is an irreversible decision.
