Merit System Overview

The Merit System includes both contract and non-contract employees in Blue Collar, Clerical, Security, and Technical positions.  Non-contract employees hold Supervisory (clerical and non-clerical) or Confidential (clerical) positions. Merit System positions do not require a college degree.

Application Instructions

Vacancies are posted weekly to this web site as well as the UNI Job Line at 319-273-2421. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis for the following classifications: Cook I, Custodian I, Clerk II, Clerk III, Clerk Typist II, Secretary I, & Secretary II. Vacancies in these classifications will be posted for a minimum of five working days. If the vacancy is not filled internally, all qualified applications will be forwarded to the search committee for review. For advertised vacancies in other classifications, you may contact our office to have the advertised position added to your application.

Application materials include the Employment Application (required), and Typing Test Form (required only for designated classifications), and the Veteran's Preference form (optional). It is important that materials are completed with accurate and specific information in order to properly assess your qualifications. Resumes may be included with the application, but may not substitute for information required in the application. Application materials will be valid for one year from the date of submission and may be updated at any time. Please be sure to maintain a current phone number and address with our office.

Typing Test Form

Positions requiring a typing test will be noted in the posting. To be considered for these positions, your typing test must be completed by the application deadline. Typing tests are administered at the Iowa Workforce Development Center in Waterloo. Click on the Typing Test Form for additional information.

Veteran's Preference Form

The University of Northern Iowa provides for veteran's preference to qualified veterans as required by Iowa Code Chapter 35C. To request veteran's preference, you must provide official documentation for military service or proof of Disabled Veteran status. Open Classifications

Applications for the following classifications are accepted on a continuous basis. There may or may not be a vacancy in each at any given time. Some clerical positions require a typing test as indicated below. Typing tests are administered at the Iowa Workforce Development Center in Waterloo once your application has been received by our office.

Classification: Cook I

Pay Grade: 4

Starting Pay Rate: $11.17/hour

Minimum Requirements: Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.

Classification: Custodian I

Pay Grade: 3

Starting Pay Rate: $10.69/hour

Minimum Requirements: Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.

Classification: Clerk II

Pay Grade: 5

Starting Pay Rate: $11.67/hour

Minimum Requirements: Any combination of clerical office experience, undergraduate education, and/or post high school clerical training that is the equivalent to one year of full-time employment.

Classification: Clerk III

Pay Grade: 8

Starting Pay Rate: $13.32/hour

Minimum Requirements: Any combination of related clerical office experience, related undergraduate education, and/or post high school clerical training that is the equivalent to two years of full-time employment. 

Classification: Clerk Typist II

Pay Grade: 5

Starting Pay Rate: $11.67/hour

Minimum Requirements: Ability to type at a minimum speed of 40 net words per minute; plus any combination of clerical office experience, undergraduate education, and/or post high school clerical training that is the equivalent to one year of full-time employment. Typing test required.  

Classification: Secretary I

Pay Grade: 5

Starting Pay Rate: $11.67/hour

Minimum Requirements: Ability to type at a minimum speed of 40 net words per minute; plus any combination of clerical office experience, undergraduate education, and/or post high school clerical training that is the equivalent to one year of full-time employment. Typing test required.  

Classification: Secretary II

Pay Grade: 8

Starting Pay Rate: $13.32/hour

Minimum Requirements: Any combination of related clerical office experience, related undergraduate education and/or post high school clerical training that is the equivalent to two years of full-time employment and includes the use of word processing plus the ability to type at a minimum speed of 40 net words per minute. Typing test required.

Smokefree Campus

Effective July 1, 2008 the Iowa Smokefree Air Act prohibits smoking anywhere on the entire UNI campus, including University owned or leased vehicles and vehicles parked in University parking lots. The new law imposes penalties for noncompliance on both the smoker and the institution in the event of a violation.
