POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
POSITION TITLE: Security Analyst
DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services – Network Services
APPOINTMENT TYPE: 12 Month, Probationary, Pay Grade IV
PRIMARY FUNCTION : Provides network intrusion detection and monitoring; contains security breaches and threats to the UNI network; provides vulnerability assessment and interprets results; assists with server or workstation compromise and communicates issues and progress as necessary; provides system and database administration and tests new tools; and provides user education as necessary.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Implements network intrusion detection sensors; identifies and contains security breaches and threats to the UNI network; monitors and proactively investigates anomalies of network intrusion detection logs, firewall logs, router ACL logs, and network flow data.
2. Scans local servers and workstations for known vulnerabilities; identifies and contains vulnerabilities found on the UNI network; and assists in interpretation of vulnerability results for relevant users and system administrators.
3. Assists in response to cases of server or workstation compromise; implements network isolation and lockdown as necessary to contain an incident and prevent further compromise; and communicates as necessary with affected parties and management regarding the steps taken in containing the incident.
4. Provides system administration for all security office servers and sensors; provides database administration for back-end servers collecting intrusion and flow data; and evaluates and tests new versions of tools used by the security office.
5. documentation for end-user and system administrator consumption; assists in maintenance and upkeep of security website; coordinates with internal organizations to establish and resolve network security issues; and gives presentations to small groups on security-related topics.
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field plus at least two years of experience in Unix/Linux system administration; LAN/WAN TCP/IP networking; and Perl and C programming required. Student experience will be considered. At least one year of IDS/router/firewall/VPN administration experience is preferred. A response to a server compromise may require evening, nighttime, or weekend hours. .
