GENERAL CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, applies knowledge and skill at the journey level to install, maintain, and repair power plant systems and equipment.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs coal, oil, and gas-fired boilers, turbines, chillers, pumps, air compressors, fans and related equipment.
- Installs boiler tubes, gauge glasses, valves, and related equipment.
- Installs and repairs pressure piping for water, steam, and air.
- Welds, using proper equipment and techniques, tubes, piping, coal chutes, ash hoppers, duct work, and structural supports.
- Forms and pours refractory linings, arches, and hopper walls.
- Designs and fabricates special equipment and piping systems using own knowledge, sketches, drawings, and field measurements
- Overhauls equipment such as boiler grates and components, pumps , fans, hydraulic systems, air compressors, material handling systems, and pollution control equipment.
- Directs the work of apprentices and others.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of power plant systems and equipment.
- Ability to determine when adjustments and repairs are necessary.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Ability to withstand constant high noise, dust, fumes, poor lighting and ventilation, and high temperature levels.
- Knowledge of the state Hazardous Chemicals Risks Right to Know Act.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, control system drawings, and repair manuals.
- Knowledge and skill in maintaining, operating, troubleshooting, and repairing chilled water and power plant equipment .
- Skill in operating hand and power tools and test
instruments.
- Ability to perform mathematical computations.
- Ability to lift at least 80 pounds.
CLASS SPECIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education or experience that involves machinery, equipment and control systems related to a utility plant which totals four years and includes a minimum of two years direct maintenance and repair experience.
