Minutes

The minutes of the February 9, 2000 meeting were read. An addition will be made to the agenda items for the March 8, 2000 meeting. AFSCME space on campus will be listed as an agenda item.

Dean Shoars made the motion to approve the minutes as changed and Marilyn Mercado seconded the motion.

AFSCME Office Space

The Proposal to the Space Advisory Committee was read. The following comments were shared by committee members:

  • It was suggested that more importance be given to the positive reasons why a space is needed and less importance on past history.
  • The location be handicapped accessible.
  • The location be on campus – center of campus preferable.
  • Total space needed would be approximately 450 square feet, with 120 square feet identified for office space use, with the remainder to be used for conference room space.
  • Remove from the second sentence "this would accommodate an office to be used approximately 25% of the time".
  • Include the number of people that the room would accommodate as justification for needing space.
  • Include schedule of hours and days of the week the room would be used.
  • It was suggested that possibly a smaller office be used for equipment, with a meeting space nearby for group meetings.

Susie will edit the proposal and distribute a copy to each committee member before the next meeting date.

Safety Committee

Dan Johnson brought forth a request that merit staff be represented on an existing or new safety committee. Dan proposed that one representative from the Department of Residence Food Service, Custodial and Maintenance staff serve on this safety committee. This committee would be involved in safety "walk throughs" to find violations and make recommendations to the Department of Residence. Dave Peerman (DOR supervisor) is currently attending Physical Plant Safety Committee meetings, and has volunteered to help set up a new committee if needed.

The following was discussed among the committee regarding this proposal:

  • There is a void in information sharing regarding safety issues.
  • Many of the DOR and Physical Plant merit staffs have different positions and needs.
  • Labor representatives should talk to their colleagues to define the safety problems they face, and define the risks.
  • Suggestions for safety training required, and define who should be involved in training?
  • Where and when is staff vulnerable?

Bob Hartman will look into the matter and will share information in upcoming meetings. Meanwhile, Dean Shoars will invite Cindy Houlson to attend a Labor/Management meeting to discuss this issue.

Educational Topics/Items

The following were identified as topics that the committee would like information about:

  1. Early Retirement
  2. Worker’s Compensation and Process
  3. Hiring Processes
  4. Transfers between state agencies

Nick Bambach gave a report on Human Resources. Performance Appraisal Training will be held in March and April for supervisors, department heads and directors. Sexual Harassment Training will be offered in the near future. A Career Development Coordinator may be hired in the future.

Agenda for April 12, 2000

Facilitator Nick Bambach

  1. AFSCME office space
  2. Cindy Houlson will speak regarding the Physical Plant Safety Committee
