SAFETY & HEALTH PROCEDURES

  • Bomb Threats

Any communication received by a staff member pertaining to a bomb threat should be relayed to the Public Safety Office immediately, 273-2712.

  • Chemical Safety

Staff members are encouraged to take an active role in identifying potential hazards including unlabeled or deteriorated products, and bringing them to the attention of their supervisor and/or the Safety Coordinator, 273-2712.

Both state and federal law requires that:

1) all new employees receive hazardous chemical training,

2) current employees receive re-training when new chemicals are introduced to their area, and

3) all employees of federal and state institutions receive hazardous chemical training at least once.

The Worker Right-to-Know program includes:

1) creating hazardous chemical lists to identify and monitor hazardous chemicals on campus,

2) training on understanding product labels and warnings,

3) requiring departments to keep Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on products used by their employees, and

4) holding employee information and training.

  • Civil Defense

The University cooperates with area Civil Defense Agencies in the protection of University staff and students, and has established shelter areas for use in emergency conditions. Warning systems are maintained. A test of the siren warning system is conducted at 11 a.m. on the 15th day of each month.

  • Fire Alarm

The fire alarm warning systems are by either bells or horns and are activated by pulling the lever on any one of the manual fire alarm pull stations within each campus building.

In case of fire:

1. Activate alarm system.

2. Call Cedar Falls Fire Department.

From Residence Halls, Dial 8, and then 911.

From other areas on campus, Dial 9, and then 911.

3. Call UNI Public Safety Office, 273-2712.

4. Assist with the orderly evacuation of the building.

5. Proceed to extinguish fire.

All staff members are expected to familiarize themselves with the location and operations of fire alarm pull stations and extinguishers.
