Career Center

5.  What opportunities are there to have a funded student assist me with a project?
Every year there are on-campus co-op positions that are funded to assist in staffing University departments and programs on a part-time, temporary basis and especially lend themselves to supporting projects or programs. Examples of past positions include: Assistant Information & Communication Specialist, Physical Plant Safety & Health Assistant, and Assistant CBA Recruitment & Retention Coordinator. Students will work closely with UNI faculty, program managers, and project directors and will be guided and supervised in the same manager required for other organizations utilizing co-op students. For more information, please contact Al Stamburg at 273-6041.

6.  What are the differences between cooperative education and internships?
An internship is usually, but not always, a single term, for-credit experience. Most students involved with the UNI program participate in an internship. A co-op alternates work and study periods over several semesters. Most "true coops," as they are often called, occur in technical fields such as engineering, computer science and industrial technology. True co-op placements are typically with large corporations and may involve two to four work periods with a company. The Career Center has a web page that explains the difference between cooperative education and internships. The web page is found at (http://www.uni.edu/careercenter/coop/index.html).

7.  Where is the Career Center located?
The Career Center is located in Student Services Center (SSC), Room 19 in the east wing of Bartlett Hall (11B on the Campus Map).

8.  What does the Career Center provide, especially with regard to career development activities?
There are a number of services that the Career Center provides such as a Career Development Guide, Job Search Tools, Job & Career Fairs, and On-Campus Interviews just to name a few. In order to learn about all the services provided, explore this web site (http://www.uni.edu/careercenter/student/studentindex.html). This is the student section of the web site and contains information on services provided, especially in regard to career development activities. After reaching this site, click on Career-Related Resources. A number of topics will be produced and each link has information about what the Career Center provides, especially the Career Service Overview and Career Development links.

9.  How do we advise students about non-academic careers involving majors that are quite open-ended  such as Women's Studies, Sociology, and English?
The Career Center has professional staff that helps students talk about strategies for a career in those areas. The staff members discern what the students' questions are and connect them with the proper resources to answer their questions including experiences.

10.  How can the Career Center help faculty and student clubs with speakers, panels, shadowing, etc.?
In order to set-up a speaker, panel, or shadowing experience, an individual needs to call the Career Center (273-6857) and speak to a professional staff member. They know of employers who would be happy to work with the faculty or student club members.

11.  Are class presentations available? What topics will we cover?
Class presentations are available. You can call the Career Center (273-6857) to schedule a date for the presentation.

There are different topics that are covered with career development such as career previews and the value of co-ops. Other topics could include the mechanics of a job search such as writing resumes and cover letters. The graduate school application process has also been a topic we've addressed.

12.  How should I write a letter of recommendation? Is it important to have the letters confidential?
There are a couple of things to remember when writing a letter of recommendation. First, explain the situation in which you know the student. Describe the class they took and the projects they completed. The letter should be experience and performance oriented. Secondly, be very professional. Use letterhead and a high quality word processor instead of hand writing the letter.

In answer to the second question, it does not have to be confidential. One of the main reasons are because it can be used effectively in interview sessions and advising sessions.

13.  How do faculty use the CareerLink feature in advising students?
Promotion of the CareerLink by faculty is helpful because some students feel they do not need to register with the CareerLink. Faculty can use the CareerLink to help students explore their options as well as demonstrating the rich resources to students through the career center and its web applications.
