Soar is coordinated through the University of Northern Iowa’s Training and Development Program in Human Resources, with support from the Office of the Vice President for Administration and Finance. The program is indebted to the hard work of students Jill Herold, Keiru Mbah, and Andy Reisdorph for their efforts in designing course material, preparing newsletter documents, writing advertising materials and web page maintenance.

Watch morale climb and professional competencies take wing with “Soar,” UNI’s new performance improvement initiative for managers and supervisors! Designed specifically for the University of Northern Iowa by HR’s Training and Career Development, Soar is a dynamic, exciting, and innovative plan to encourage teambuilding and foster empowerment at all levels of the UNI community.

Through multiple interventions such as a certificated training series, newsletters, and self-paced electronic learning programs, “Soar!” hopes to change the way we work and live at UNI by:

• Improving managers’ and supervisors’ professional competencies.
  
  
• Standardizing managerial practices throughout the university, thereby increasing the perception of fairness and equality from staff members.
  
  
• Socializing managers and supervisors to the university’s core values, thereby assisting the university in meeting its strategic plan.
  
  
• Improving professional relationships between management and staff, and between UNI employees and external customers.
  
  
• Establishing a sense of empowerment and self-efficacy in UNI managers and supervisors.
  
  
• Enhancing staff morale and organizational climate.

The flight plan is simple: UNI managers and supervisors improve their communication skills, managerial knowledge and organizational expertise to become the front-line resource for staff motivation and empowerment. Together with their staff members, UNI managers and supervisors will help the university “Soar” high above the horizon!
