Return
Empty Mail Envelopes (11/2/07)
The
Mail Center is asking departments to return excess empty Campus
Mail envelopes to them so that they can disperse them to departments
in need. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Postage
Rates to Increase May 14, 2007 (4/2/2007)
The US
Postal Service will increase postage rates on May 14, 2007. Average
increases will be between 8 and 14%, depending upon weight and classification.
The rate increase was made known months ago, but please be aware
that MAJOR changes directly related to the dimension of mail peices
will also occur. To see the new rate tables log on to http://www.usps.com/ratecase/welcome.htm.
Transportation
Costs Drive Mail Piece Rate Increase (10/9/2006):
PSI
of Cedar Rapids advised Central Mail/SUI and the UNI Mail Center
late in September, that they were discontinuing their morning mail
service to the Cedar Valley. The impact to UNI, is that with the
discontinuation of the route and afternoon only service provided,
UNI outgoing mail would no longer be metered and processed the same
day. The UNI Mail Center believes that is an unacceptable level
of service for UNI.
It
should be noted that PSI has been an integral part of our partnership
with Central Mail since inception. UNI Mail has traveled free of
charge from Cedar Falls to Cedar Rapids as the presort facility
was already serving other firms in the Cedar Valley area and had
excess capacity. There was a cost for transport from Cedar Rapids
to Central Mail in Iowa City. PSI benefited by receiving the merged
UNI mail volume with SUI mail volume and both universities benefited
by reduced rates.
After
discussing with Central Mail and Chris Kula, we concurred in that
we no longer want to be reliant on a third party for transport.
SUI will assume responsibility for transporting UNI mail to Iowa
City on an interim basis, effective October 9. The additional costs
will be passed on to all UNI departments in the form of a $0.01
per piece increase for US and bulk mail. We estimate those costs
to be approximately $15,000 annually. (Note: PSI estimated
their daily cost for providing the service at $115/day or $28,750
annually).
UNI
Mail Center will continue to explore additional options on a permanent
basis and, during our interim arrangement, will ensure that outgoing
UNI mail is metered and processed same day and will get the mail
to Iowa City on those days when mechanical problems prevent SUI
from picking it up, just as we did when PSI was providing the service.
UNI departments will not see any changes in their current mail delivery
and pick-up times.
