Resources
are available for employees to access email, calendar and even their
office computer software programs and files when they are not in
their office. By simply connecting to the Internet, anyone can read
and send UNI email and use Oracle Calendar. Another type of access
through the Internet, called “Remote Desktop Access”
allows employees to access everything on their office computer from
another computer. To get Remote Desktop
Access submit a Request
Remote Access form (your
supervisor must approve). Contact
Technology Systems and Services at 273-2461 to have your computer
setup to accept remote connections
Before You Leave Campus
- Decide what type of electronic access is best
for you.
- Access to email (Web Based Mail) and Oracle
calendar by connecting to the Internet .
- Access to all programs and files on your office
computer including email (Thunderbird) and Oracle calendar with
Remote Desktop Connection via the Internet.
- Get your office computer IP address.
- Leave your office computer turned on.
- Determine how you will obtain Internet connectivity.
- Local Internet Connection: Wireless connection,
Cedar Falls Utilities, Media Com, AOL or another local internet
provider.
- Long Distance Internet Connection:
- Wireless connection – may be available,
depending on where you are traveling.
- Wireless Air Cards (cellular
carrier service) - are available for purchase by departments.
Charges include the card and a monthly service fee.
- High speed internet access – some
hotels provide this free of charge.

Before
leaving, verify that your laptop is configured to function according
to the specifications of your travel destination. For example,
if you are attending a conference and expecting to use a wireless
connection, you should verify that wireless is available and that
your laptop has the wireless turned on. Contact
Technology Systems and Services at 273-2461 to discuss your needs.
Loaner Laptop Computers
Administration
and Finance has a limited number of laptop computers available
for staff to use when traveling on university business. Loaner
laptop computers have a standard software package used by Administration
and Finance employees. Laptops can be requested through an electronic
form or by calling 273-2461. Allow about 15 minutes when picking
up your loaner laptop for TSS staff to configure the computer
for your login.

Username and Password
- Turn on computer and press Control Alt Delete.
- Enter Your Windows User name
- Enter Your Windows Password
- Log on to: TSS_CHECKOUT# (this computer).
- Click OK

Your Computer to the Internet
High Speed/Dial-up Connection
Connecting
to the Internet through a high speed or dial up connection requires
that you have an ethernet card, wireless card and a cable. When
traveling with a loaner laptop from Administration and Finance,
the ethernet card, wireless card and ethernet cable will be provided
in the computer case.
NOTE: If you
have a newer laptop, the ethernet card and wireless are built-in.
Hardware
:
- For laptops without built-in ethernet card,
insert Ethernet card into the slot on the side of the computer.

- Plug one end of the ethernet cable into ethernet
connection and the other end into the high speed wall jack.
High Speed
Connection : Double click Internet Explorer.
If your
connection is not working properly in a hotel, call the front desk
for assistance.
Wireless Connection
Wireless
connection to the Internet is available in many locations. If you
are using a hotel’s wireless network, it is possible that
you will have to enter a Username and password to connect. Ask the
hotel for the key (username and password). If you are trying to
gain access from a location other than a hotel, it is possible your
access will be restricted. It is advised to learn of location restrictions
before traveling.
Connecting to Wireless
on Campus
- In the lower right corner of your laptop screen
a set of icons will appear like the ones seen below. If all of
the icons are not displayed, click on the Start button in the
bottom left of your screen. Click Programs > Accessories >
Communications. The icon described below should appear.

- Click on the icon that has a computer screen
with a red X by it.
- The following form will appear, click the Connect
button as directed in the form.

- If the laptop you borrowed from TSS has never
had anyone log into the VPAF domain, you will have to enter your
Window’s User name (usually your last name), password and
enter VPAF as the domain at this point. See example below.
- If you are having problems connecting, it could
be the person who logged into the VPAF domain has had a password
change. To correct this, login with your user name, password and
VPAF domain.

- Enter your Windows User Name (usually your last
name).
- Enter your Windows Password.
- Enter VPAF as Logon domain.
- Click OK.

Connecting to Wireless
from Off Campus
- In the lower right corner of your laptop screen
a set of icons will appear like the ones seen below. If all of
the icons are not displayed, click on the Start button in the
bottom left of your screen. Click Programs > Accessories >
Communications. The icon described below should appear.

- Click on the icon that has a computer screen
with a red X by it.
- The following form will appear, click
the Connect button. In this example only one wireless
networks is available. If more than one network is available,
select the wireless network you want to use. If you are using
a hotel’s wireless network, it is possible that you will
have to enter a Username and password to connect. Ask the hotel
for the key (username and password). If you are trying to gain
access from a location other than a hotel, it is possible your
access will be restricted. It is advised to learn of location
restrictions before traveling.

A message
like the one below will appear. Click Connect anyway.

The following
form will appear.

Open Internet
Explorer.
To disconnect,
click the disconnect button and the message below will appear.

Click Yes.
Accessing
E-mail and Calendar Via the Internet (not remote connection)
To access
UNI email and Oracle Calendar on the Internet, enter the web address
for each application.
UNI Web Mail
Enter
the web address http://www.uni.edu/email.
Click either the WebAccess or WebMail button and log on by entering
your UNI email username and password (CATID).
Oracle Calendar
Enter the web address calendar.uni.edu.
This web address will take you to a page that displays Corporate Time
for the Web. Log on by entering your Oracle Calendar username and
password. Although the calendar will appear slightly different than
the one you use at your desk, it is the same calendar. You can make
appointments, view your appointments and perform any other functions
you use with your calendar.
