Launching
Thunderbird E-mail
- Click on the e-mail icon on your desktop to launch Thunderbird.
As
Thunderbird loads, it prompts you to enter your e-mail password.
- Type password and click OK.
- Thunderbird will automatically check for new mail messages.
New messages will appear in bold print.

Reading
an E-mail
- Clicking on the message one time will open the message in the
message preview area located below your inbox.
- Double clicking the message will open it in a new window.
- Once you have selected the message you have the option to:

- Reply: send a message back to the sender
- Reply All: send a message to all original recipients of the
e-mail
- Forward: send the message to someone different
- Delete: send the message to the trash folder
- Junk: mark the message as junk mail
- Print: print the message

Writing
an E-mail
Click
on write
- A new window opens
- Your e-mail address automatically appears in the from line
- Type the person(s) e-mail address.
- Type a short description of the message in the subject line.
- Type your message in the large white box. You can change the
formatting of your message by using the controls above the message
box.

Using
the Compose Toolbar
- Send: delivers the message to specified recipients
- Contacts: opens your address book
- Spell: checks the spelling in your message
- Attach: used to attach documents to your message
- Security: gives information on the security level of your message
- Save: allows you to save your message

Sending
Attachments
Click
on the paperclip Attach icon on the toolbar.
- Attach File(s) screen allows retrieval of the file. Find the
file from the Look in field.
- Select file by double clicking on the file and this will place
it in your email as an attachment.

Reading
Attachments
Attachments may contain
viruses. We recommend that you not open unsolicited attachments.
Also, we recommend that you keep up-to-date antivirus software installed
on your computer.
Attachments
will display at the bottom of the email message.
- Double click on the icon by the attachment name and the document
will open.

Adding
Names to the Address Book
When sending a message
to someone who is not in your address book, a card is automatically
created and added to your book for future use.
- Click on Address Book

To
add a new name, click on new card
- Fill out the information on the card. None of the information
is required, but it is recommended that the following information
is filled out
- First
- Last
- E-mail
- Filling out the rest of the information is optional.
- Click OK
- The information is now available in your address book.

Using
the Address Book
Your address book
can be used to enter the e-mail address of people you regularly
e-mail.
- Click on write

- When you are ready to insert addresses click on Contacts

- Click on the name or e-mail address you would like to enter
and select either “Add to To:” or “Add to CC:”
CC means Carbon Copy, meaning that a copy of the message will
be sent to the address selected.
- Once you are finished inserting addresses click either on the
black X in the upper right hand corner or on Contacts again to
close your address book.
- Continue writing your message as usual.

Junk
Mail Controls
Junk mail controls
can help you manage the junk mail delivered to your inbox.
To
set junk mail controls go to the Tools menu and select Junk Mail
Controls.
- Click on the adaptive filters tab and make sure that the box
for enabling junk mail detection is checked.
- Click on the settings tab.
- Make sure that the following boxes are checked
- Do not mark messages as junk if the sender is in my address
book.
- When I manually mark messages as junk
- Move them to the “Junk” folder
- When displaying HTML messages marked as junk, sanitize the
HTML
Note that the box “Move incoming
messages determined to be junk mail to:” has been left unchecked.
Users must train Thunderbird to recognize messages that are junk
mail before allowing it to remove messages automatically.
- Junk mail controls will begin monitoring incoming e-mails. If
the controls recognize a message as junk, they will mark it.

Messages
Marked Incorrectly
- If junk mail controls accidentally mark a message as junk and
it isn't,
- click the not junk button
- The junk mail marking will disappear

- Future similar messages will not be tagged as junk
- If junk mail misses a message that is junk
- Select the message
- Click the Junk icon on the tool bar

- Future messages like it will be recognized as junk.

Removing
Junk Mail from the Inbox
- Click on Tools and select Delete Mail Marked as Junk in Folder
- Messages marked as junk will be sent to the Junk folder

Setting
Automatic Junk Mail Removal
Monitor the junk mail
controls for a couple of weeks. Once you feel like Thunderbird is
catching most of you unwanted mail without removing wanted messages
you can opt to have Junk mail automatically sent to your junk folder.
- Select Junk Mail Controls located under the Tools menu
- Check the box “Move incoming messages determined to be
junk mail to:”
It
is recommended that you choose to move junk messages to the junk
folder
- Make sure you check your junk mail folder at least once every
two days to make sure that wanted messages are not being classified
as junk. You can also view the junk mail log, located in the Junk
Mail Controls menu to review what messages are being recognized
as junk.

Adding
a Signature to Your Email
- Create
your signature in a text file such as Notepad.
example:
John Doe
University
of Northern Iowa
Training
Coordinator
319-273-1111
- Save
your text file on your computer.
- Open
Mozilla Thunderbird.
- Click
Tools > Account Settings.

- On the Account Settings
page, locate the text “Attach this signature:”
- Click
in the box by Attach this signature.
- Click
the Choose button and find the text file with your signature.
- Click
Ok.
Your
signature will now appear on your e-mails.
