Virus Information

Vulnerability to viruses, including those known as worms and Trojans (see definitions*), is possible in everyday computer use.

Whether browsing the Internet, reading email, or chatting online with friends, you are potentially susceptible to an infection on your computer. Some viruses can be extremely destructive, while others cause minor annoyances.

Virus-scanning software can only protect from known viruses. This type of software is the second line of defense; it is second to appropriate end-user precautions.

Think you have a virus? Is your computer acting strange? Please contact the Help Desk right away. You may either call (319) 273-2461 or e-mail vpaf-tss@uni.edu.

Virus Definitions

What is a Virus?
A virus is a piece of code or program that causes an unwanted or harmful action on your computer. Viruses can come in an email from people that you don?t know, and increasingly come from people that you do know. Viruses can also be downloaded, disguised as a game, screensaver, or picture.

What is a Worm?
A worm is a type of virus that can also cause an unwanted or harmful action on your computer. Additionally, the worm attempts to replicate itself by sending a copy to others, thus continuing the infection. Worms are an increasingly popular trend with recent viruses, and a good reason not to open attachments, even from people that you know.

What is a Trojan?
A Trojan is a more serious type of virus than a typical virus or worm. What makes a Trojan more serious is that it disguises itself as a benign program but in fact causes an unwanted or harmful action on your computer. Typically, a Trojan also comes bundled with programs that allow remote users access to your computer, without either your knowledge or your consent.

Antivirus Software

Symantec Antivirus Software
To help protect your computer against viruses, both known and yet to be created, you should be using a virus-scanning application. Symantec Antivirus is the product that all members of the campus community should use and faculty, students, and staff have access to a no-cost, pre-configured, and automated version of Symantec Antivirus.

This virus-scanning software runs transparently on your computer and helps to keep it from becoming infected with viruses. The software also regularly updates itself.
