Description of Long Term Disability for Merit AFSCME and Merit Confidential

Long-term disability insurance provides salary replacement if an employee is totally disabled. Coverage begins after one year of service and coverage is increased for every year of service. Maximum benefit is 70% of salary to a limit of $3,150 per month. UNI pays the entire cost for the program. Benefits begin after a 90 working day waiting period or expiration of all accrued sick leave.

The coverage schedule is as follows:

 


After first year of service
Benefit equals 30% of monthly compensation
 
  After second year of service   Benefit equals 40% of monthly compensation
 
  After third year of service   Benefit equals 50% of monthly compensation
 
  After fourth year of service   Benefit equals 60% of monthly compensation
 
  After fifth year of service   Benefit equals 70% of monthly compensation

 


Employees may apply for supplemental disability coverage. If elected, employee pays the entire cost of the supplemental coverage through payroll deduction.
